Rejuvenate Your Look

Loose, sagging skin around your eyelids can really show your age and make you look tired even after a good night's rest.

Blepharoplasty, or eyelid surgery, in Toronto is a minimally invasive procedure that can help you get rid of excess skin, fine lines and puffiness, as well as reduce the thin, crepe-paper look of aged skin around your eyes. Evening and weekend consultation and surgery times available.

Surgery steps: how blepharoplasty is done, how blepharoplasty is performed

Preparation

  • Stop smoking for at least four weeks before your surgery.
  • Don’t take any medications or supplements that can cause excessive bruising and bleeding, such as aspirin, ibuprofen and high doses of vitamin E.
  • Fill prescription medications so they're ready to use after your surgery.
  • If you damage your eyes before surgery, please let us know immediately. Your surgery may be rescheduled until after your eyes heal.

Surgery

  • Sedation anesthesia or general anesthesia may be used during eyelid surgery.
  • Depending on your cosmetic concerns, incisions will be placed along the upper eyelid crease or inside the lower eyelid. Excess skin is removed to correct eyelid hooding and drooping, and fat in the lower eyelid area may be repositioned to correct eye bags and wrinkles.

Eyelid surgery is often performed in combination with a brow lift in Toronto to further correct upper eyelid sagging and uplift the eyebrows, as well as with laser rejuvenation to improve skin texture and reduce wrinkles.

Recovery period

Toronto blepharoplasty patients may return home the day of their procedure and should expect to spend at least 5-7 days recovering, during which time Dr. Kara will remove your stitches. Dr. Kara will check in with you regularly to ensure you are healing properly and advise you on when it's safe to resume wearing contacts (usually 1-2 weeks) and using makeup in the eye area (usually within one week).

Some bruising and swelling after the procedure is normal but pain should be minimal, and all temporary side effects will usually resolve within 1-2 weeks. By 2-3 weeks patients can typically resume exercising and within 1-2 months, the final eyelid surgery results should start to become visible.
