Getting Rid of Hyperhidrosis

Do you fear the summertime because of excess sweating? You love the summer’s sunshine but fear the consequences of frequent sun exposure.

Have no fear, at Dr. Kara Plastic Surgery we have a great treatment option that can help you to reduce excess sweat or treat hyperhidrosis, just in time for the summer!

Sweating is natural and an important bodily function, as it helps to regulate temperature. However, we believe that it should not affect a person’s quality of life, self-esteem or desire for social interaction. We understand that excessive sweating may cause frustration or embarrassment. We believe it’s important to not only look your best but to feel your best too.

With our Lutronic INFINI® device, which uses radiofrequency and microneedling, we can provide you with a long-lasting treatment option to help you reduce your underarm sweat. This procedure will target and decrease the size of your sweat glands; however, glands do remain and as such, you will still maintain some sweating following treatment. The procedure requires no downtime or changes to your regular routine. Each treatment cycle will take approximately 15 minutes so you can be in and out of the clinic quickly!

When you come in for the INFINI procedure, we will numb the target area, and use the device to hit the glands and decrease their size. Typically, we will do 2 passes of the device over the armpit area at three different levels or settings. Often, our patients are satisfied after one treatment, as it can result in a significant reduction in sweat; however, we find that two to three treatments can provide better results. Most patients will see results within 3 weeks; however in some cases, an improvement can be seen in 3-7 days following treatment.

Alternatively, BOTOX® can be used to reduce sweat in the armpits. This is an effective method but does not provide a long-lasting or permanent solution. If you are seeking a temporary solution, ask us about this option.

Research has shown that radiofrequency treatment through microneedling is both safe and effective to permanently reduce excessive sweating. In one study, researchers concluded that their patients had an obvious decrease in sweat. The side effects following treatment in this study were minimal and included redness and minor, temporary bleeding from the microneedles. The researchers concluded that this procedure decreased the size of the sweat glands while minimizing any potential damage to the tissue that surrounds the glands.

50% to 75% Improvement

In another study, participants had between a 50-75% improvement in sweating; meaning, that the excessive sweating of the participants had reduced substantially after two treatment cycles. In this study, the side effects were also shown to be minimal, with some minor swelling, redness, mild discomfort, tingling and temporary hyperpigmentation. All of the side effects resolved naturally within one to two weeks. However, 2 patients out of 20 did have compensatory hyperhidrosis as a result.
